SOME OLD LINKS TO THE PIONEER WEBSITE ATHENA
When the first documents of Athena were installed on the Web, in 1994, the Web was nearly empty. In this time, things were not easy: we spent trying to configurate NCSA Mosaic Web browser, or 5.6 Kb or 14.4Kb modems, or needle printers (how to obtain both semi-colon and e acute?...); we had no scanner; it was quite an event when html2 replaced html.
There were three known digital libraries: Gutenberg in the USA, ABU in France and Athena at Geneva University. Books edited in our digital library were created at Athena; not copied from other Websites as so many plagiarists do!
There was no full mineral databases on the Internet (see dated screen captures hereunder). We put on line the mineral database created at MHNG in the '80: a time consuming work, searching data, typing and correcting thousands of mineral names, formula, type localities.
In the '90, we printed some Web pages with links to Athena, for memory. Now we scanned some of those printed documents, and display them herunder. The purpose is only to retain the memory of the beginning of the Internet adventure.
