CHOLOKHOV, Mikhaïl Aleksandrovitch (1905-1984)
(ШОЛОХОВ / SHOLOKHOV)

Franais] [English]

A bas l'autocratie!

    Workers of all countries, unite!
    Comrades! Soldiers!
For two years this accursed war has gone on. For two years, you have suffered in the trenches defending interests that are not your own. For two years the blood of workers and peasants of all countries has been spilled. Hundreds of thousands of dead and maimed, hundreds of thousands of orphans and widows: that is the result of this massacre. What are you fighting for? Whose interests are you protecting? The imperial government has put millions of soldiers under fire in order to seize more land and oppress their people, just as they have subjugated and oppressed Poland, and just as other nations are now enslaved. Global manufacturers do not share markets where they could sell the products from their factories; they do not share profits - sharing is done by the force of weapons - and you, the little people, walk to your death fighting for their interests; you kill men who are workers just like you.
Enough of your brothers' blood has been shed! Wake up, workers! Your enemy is not the Austrian or the German soldier, deceived like you, but your own Tsar, your industrialists, your landlords. Turn your guns against them. Fraternize with the German and Austrian soldiers. Through the barbed wire that separates you from each other as if you were wild beasts, stretch your hand. Workers, you are brothers. Your hands, blistered and bloodied by your labors, have not yet healed; you have nothing to lose. Down with autocracy! Down with imperialist war! Long live the unbreakable unity of the working people all over the world!
